Technical Capabilities

  

One fun aspect about fuel cells is the large number of scientific fields involved in making them perform. Our polymer chemists address the challenge of conductive composites that are light, strong and conductive. The catalyst layer must efficiently transport gases to the catalyst and water to where it is needed while maintaining physical strength and adhere to the proton exchange membrane. And when the fuel cell is finished, it has to work with computer controlled sensors and controls. Our scientists and engineers are experienced chemists, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers, designers and more.

Some of the tools and methods we have available to help solve our research problems are:

- Particle size reduction, with and without cryogenics
- Particle size classification
- Mold design and manufacture
- Compression molding
- Electrical and mechanical property testing
- Permeability testing of membranes and thin plastic/composite plates
- CNC milling
- Electro mechanical assembly and test
- Fuel cell assembly
- Fuel cell test, for 1 W to 1500 W stacks
- Electrochemical testing with impedance spectrometer
- PC Board design, manufacture, assembly and test
- System control software design and development
